Ancient Civilizations

Great Pyramids

Ancient Egypt

Egypt is located in the northern part of Africa. The Mediterranean Sea is to its north and the Red Sea is to the east of Egypt. The first people who settled in Egypt were farmers. They settled along the Nile River around 5000 B.C. The Nile River flows into the Mediterranean Sea. Egypt's climate is dry and hot. The area received little rainfall and the region was mainly desert. However, the Nile River would flood each year, creating fertile planting grounds and allowing the ancient Egyptians to grow their crops. The ancient Egyptians also built the Great Pyramids, which are still standing today. The pyramids were built as burial places for the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. They used Hieroglyphics as a form of writing. Hieroglyphics used pictures instead of the text we use today. They made paper from papyrus. The ancient Egyptians also invented the 365-day calendar and the clock, inventions which are still used today.

Great Wall of China

Ancient China

China is located on the continent of Asia. In fact, it is the largest country entirely in Asia. China has the largest population of any country in the world. The land contains deserts, forests, mountains, and hills. The climate in China is seasonal and different across different areas of China, just like it is here in the United States. The ancient Chinese adapted to their environment by fishing and farming for food and by irrigating the land to help their crops grow. The ancient Chinese used characters and symbols in their written language. The Great Wall of China is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in, built, rebuilt, and maintained between the 5th century BC and the 16th century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire. It is the longest man-man structure in the world, stretching over 4,000 miles. Much of it is still standing today. Many inventions of the ancient Chinese are still in use today, such as kites, silk cloth, the compass, bronze, and fireworks.
