There was once a farmer who raised sheep. In the mornings he would lead them from the barn to their field. There he would watch over them all day. In the evenings, he would lead them back to the barn. As time went by the flock grew larger. One day the farmer realized that he was getting too old to take care of the sheep by himself. He decided that he needed a guard dog to help him.
The next day the farmer brought Milo home. Milo was a trained guard dog. The farmer took Milo with him in the morning. He watched as Milo walked around the field, keeping an eye on the sheep. The farmer went back to his farmhouse, happy that Milo was doing a good job.
As soon as the farmer went inside, Milo lay down and closed his eyes. One of the sheep, Sally, came up to him and asked him what he was doing. "Why, I am taking a nap," he replied.
"But you are supposed to be guarding us," said Sally. Sally was the oldest of the sheep.
"You have been coming to this field for a long time," answered Milo. "You should know not to wander off. Just let me sleep and we will have a nice day." With that, Milo closed his eyes. Sally became worried. What if a bear or a wolf came onto the field? Sally decided that they needed to teach Milo a lesson. She gathered the sheep and told them her plan. Very quietly, the sheep began to leave the field. They hid in the nearby woods abd waited for the farmer to return from his nap.
When the farmer returned, he saw Milo sleeping. "Wake up, you lazy dog!" the farmer shouted. "All of my sheep have disappeared while you were sleeping!" Milo saw the empty field and got very frightened. After a few minutes Sally and the other sheep came out of the woods. the farmer was very happy, and he led the sheep back to the barn. Then he told Milo, "Tonight you can sleep outside with no dinner. Maybe tomorrow you will remember to stay awake."
After the farmer went to bed, Milo asked Sally, "Why did you get me in trouble?"
Sally told him, "Because you are supposed to protect us. You cannot do that if you are asleep."
Milo agreed, and said that from now on he would stay awake. This was the last night he wanted to spend hungry and cold.
